Double Dutch meeting Martha Graham meeting African dance meeting Edgar Allan Poe meeting beatboxing best describes Johari Mayfield’s eclectic enclave of dance, theatre, music, and digital media. As a movement storyteller who weaves movement tapestries of past memory to present reality, she strives to transform the voyeur experience blurring the lines between movement, technology and narrative flow. As a performer, she’s done it all from being a Voudoun priestess, to carrying Christmas packages as a Disney character at Radio City Music Hall to dodging explosives in a post modern “Porgy and Bess.” As a choreographer, Johari’s work has been well received in several venues throughout the city and abroad including Dance New Amsterdam, P.S.122, 45 Bleecker Theatre and the Spark Festival for Electronic Music and Art in Minneapolis. She was the recipient of an award for best choreography at the New York Fringe Festival in 2005. Currently she is a Principal Soloist and Rehearsal Director for Forces of Nature Dance Theatre Company and a resident artist at HERE Arts Center in New York.
